NELSON - was named after the British Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, who defeated both the French & Spanish Fleets and was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 at the age of 47. Nelson is New Zealand's second oldest city and was settled in 1841. Many of Nelson's Roads & Public areas are named after the people and ships associated with the Battle. Trafalgar Street being its main Street. Lord Ernest Rutherford was also born in Nelson in 1871, he was a chemist and physicist . Rutherford became known as the 'father' of nuclear physics. He pioneered the orbital theory of the atom through his discovery of Rutherford scattering off the nucleus with his gold foil experiment. He was awarded a nobel prize in 1908 New Zealand is known as a rugby nation - in fact the first rugby match took place in Nelson on 14 May 1870 between Nelson Football Club and Nelson College. Nelson has more sunshine hours than any other part of New Zealand, which is great for the outdoors and adventurous types.
NELSON CITY - Renowned for it's 350 or more working artists, Nelson even boasts itself as having the Goldsmith who created 'The One Ring' for "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. Nelson was also the centre for many of the prop creations, the beer for the Prancing Pony in Bree was brewed in Nelson. Filming for Chetwood Forests, Rivendell & Dimrill Dale were also filmed in remote locations around the Nelson Region. From Kingsland Court Motel a short 5 minute drive along the scenic Rocks Road into town, past Haul Ashore Island and The Cut, will bring you to our 'City'. One of the best known tracks in this area is the Heaphy Track a four to six day tramp taking in the spectacular views of the Kahurangi National Park This is an easy Day Trip from Nelson
In the Winter this region offers superb cross country and powder skiing at the Rainbow and Mt Robert Ski fields these have been reported as some of the best ski fields in New Zealand and are a favorite winter destination for locals and visitors.
