Richmond has an expanding retail base, including the region’s largest shopping mall, an aquatic centre, cafés, library, retirement complexes, and health services. This is the local town centre for the Waimea Plains district which supports many market gardens and orchards. Fruit juices and wines are produced in this area, and there are also timber and wood chip mills. The low mountain range rising behind Richmond forms part of Mount Richmond State Forest Park, the park comprises most of the steep native forest-covered mountain country between Nelson & Blenheim, as well as the commercially planted pine forest plantations on public land. There are bush walks popular in this area including the hacket. Adjacent rivers with excellent swimming spots are located in the Lee and Aniseed valleys and are popular for picnics, walking and Mountain Biking.
