Nelson Lakes![]() Nelson LakesThe Nelson Lakes National Park offers tranquil beech forests, craggy mountains, clear streams and small and large glacial lakes, in summer ideal for tramping / hiking, kayaking, boating & trout fishing, not to mention white water rafting for the more adventurous.The Nelson Lakes has two large lakes, Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa, formed during the last ice age when massive glaciers gouged out troughs in the mountainous head waters of the Buller River. Today they are full of water forming the 2 lakes in the Nelson Lakes National Park.surrounded by mountain peaks, some are over 2000m. The park offers challenges for mountaineers, rock climbers and trampers. There are many interesting walks in the park ranging from one hour to all day. There is good trout fishing for the keen fishermen. St Arnaud is a small alpine village located South of Nelson it is situated at the northern end of Lake Rotoiti.Lake RotoitiAround the lake are a network of tracks enabling you to explore the lake edge, the lakes glacial features and tranquil beech forests. The lake is also a popular place for water skiing and kayaking and is adjacent to Mt Robert. There are also brown trout in this lake for the fisherman. March each year the lake comes alive, a weekend of boating history and nostalgia as the New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show is held. Short Walks - (Lake Rotoiti)Bellbird Walk - This is one of the walks developed to showcase the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project area. The track is wheel chair friendly and begins at the car park near the east jetty at Kerr Bay. Allow 10 minutes walking time for this short walk, and longer if you want to read the six interpretation panels along the way . The Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project is one of the Department of Conservations major projects, it aims to create a sanctuary with fewer pests in the Honeydew beech forests beside Lake Rotoiti. Lake RotoruaForty minutes drive from St Arnaud is Lake Rotorua. The largest lake of the Nelson Lakes National Park, it is completely surrounded by beech, podocarp and kahikatea forest. Several tracks, ideal for day or short walks extend along the lake edge and into the peaceful surroundings. There is a small community at the base of the lake named Roturua . The Gowan River flows out of the lake at this point, thus making the lake one of the sources of the Buller River system.Anglers can enjoy catching trout. Short Walks (Lake Rotorua)Short Loop Track - This track starts at the picnic area near the Lake and proceeds along the Lakeside Track for about 10 minutes before branching off to the left onto the loop section. It returns to the picnic area via the start of the Porika Track.The gentle nature of this ramble is a botanists delight. Of all the short walks in the park, this one contains the greatest variety of tall forest trees, shrubs, climbing vines mosses and particularly ferns. Here, the beech/podocarp forest found around the Lake is at its most diverse. Near the beginning of the walk, on the forest floor and along the edge of the stream are many different fern species.
