Nelson is the country's eighth largest wine region and is an area of very stylish wines. Viticulture occupies scattered pockets with a range of horticultural activities on the alluvial loam soils of the Waimea Plains and in the folds and valleys of the beautiful hills throughout the district. Soil structure here changes to clay loams over hard clay subsoil. 

Nelson winemakers specialise and excel in grape varieties that respond to cooler growing conditions. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir account for over 80% of the region's vineyard area.

Nelson offers an array of beautiful boutique wineries in gorgeous settings from the hills to the plains. With local Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris And Gerwurtztraminer winning international acclaim. Why not try a tasting or bask in the sunshine at one of the many cellar doors or enjoy a platter or lunch at any of the vineyard cafes.

There are 23 family owned wineries in the Nelson region, making these exquisite wines.  You can usually meet the winemakers and families themselves and discuss the quality of these wines. Some of these vineyards have breathtaking views taking in the scenery of the region.

In fact Nelson wins more medals per hectare of vines planted than any other Wine Making Region in New Zealand.
