Cycling Around Nelson

Nelson is great for cycling, whether its a leisurely bike ride along the waterfront or mountain biking up in one of the forests there is plenty to do in and around Nelson.


Listed are just few suggestions for various gentle leisurely bike rides in and around Nelson, these cycle rides are suitable for family outings at a relaxed speed.

This bike ride follows Rocks Road along the waterfront for stunning views and returns via the Nelson Marina. A great cycle to stop for a picnic, swim at the beach or make use of the recreational activities at Tahunanui Reserve.  

Grade: Easy. Distance/time: total 11km. 5 km (25 minutes) to beach; 6km (35 minutes) return via Nelson Marina

Maitai River Ride

This cycle ride takes you along the riverside and into the start of the leafy Maitai Valley, a nice short ride with the option to connect to some off-road rides. There are some lovely picnic spots by the river, or bring your togs for a swim in the warmer months. 

Grade: Easy – suitable for families. Distance/time: 3.7 kms, (15-20 minutes) each way

Trafalagar Cycleway

This bicycle ride uses the Trafalgar Cycleway and takes you past Founders Heritage Park and the Miyazu Japanese Gardens.  Carry on to the Wakapuaka Cemetery to enjoy the views and make use of the playground at Neale Park on the return journey.  

Grade: Easy, Distance/time: 4.8 kms, (30 minute) loop


Old Railway Route

This ride takes advantage of the cycleways that are part of the Railway Reserve and of those alongside Whakatu Drive. There are plenty of seats and ideal spots for a picnic.   

Attractions along the way – The WOW Museum, Honest Lawyer Pub, Monaco, Waimea Estuary, Richmond Water Centre, McCashins Brewery, ASB Aquatic Centre.  Also Close by - Bay Brewery, Lighthouse Brewery, Saxton Park, Broadgreen House, Isel House, Samuels Rose Garden. Sprig and Fern (Richmond). 

Grade: Easy, Distance/time: 13 kms (45-60 minutes) loop

This is an easy, quiet coastal bike ride where you could enjoy a family picnic along the waters edge or check out the Honest Lawyer Pub for a snack. Enjoy the coastal views.

Grade: Easy, Distance/time: 5 kms, (25 minutes) return 


City to Annesbrook (Old Railway Route)

This is another great facility, the ride follows the railway reserve from victory square to Beatson road. you will cross the annesbrook overbridge and be rewarded with the annesbrook youth park to play in.  

Grade: Moderate, Distance/time: 4 kms, (20-30 minutes) each way


Other Cycling Trails for the more adventurous around Nelson listed below, these mountain bike rides are just a small selection of rides available and are aimed towards the beginners.   New Zealand is an outstanding visitor destination, and there’s no doubt that one of the best ways to explore it is by cycling, the Nelson Region is no exception and we have two trails which will appeal to a wide cross section of cyclists and day trippers.
