Murchison
Recognised as the "Whitewater Capital" of New Zealand, the Buller River is a rugged and scenic river providing some of the best white water rafting, as well as nearby rivers the Gowan, Mangles, Matiri, Glenroy, Matakitaki and Maruia, with many excellent whitewater runs ranging from Class 2 to 4. The Buller flows from Lake Rotoiti through mountainous country to the Tasman Sea on the West Coast. The above rivers are also world renowned for fly fishing in crystal-clear water. Being on the edge of the Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks, there are plenty of interesting walks nearby ranging from 10 minute strolls to multi day trips. Only approx 2 hours drive away from Nelson, Murchison has attractions galore and even better is packed full of friendly locals. Murchison is in an earthquake zone and in 1968 at Inangahua an again in 1929 and 1931 big earthquakes struck these areas. Signs of the earthquakes can be seen today in the region, namely Maruia Falls formed as a result of the 1929 earthquake. The history of the earthquakes can be seen in the local Murchison Museum. Along the Murchison - Westport road winding along the Buller River, you will come upon the Buller Gorge Swingbridge, it is New Zealand's longest swingbridge (110m long and 17m high) above the rushing waters of the Buller River. Murchison was originally a gold mining town, and you can still try your luck at gold panning at the swingbridge. You can wander around the historical site and learn about the areas fascinating past as a major gold mining area. Well worth a stop whether you have 5 minutes or a few hours.
