Moutere

Moutere_Nelson_NZ_Motel_accoomdation.jpg

The Moutere is a unique part of the Nelson region.

Bordered by the Mount Arthur range to the west, the rise of hills leading to the Moutere signal the beginning of the Kahurangi National Park, a walkers paradise and New Zealand's second largest national park.

You get here on the the scenic Inland Moutere Highway - an alternative route between Motueka and Nelson in the Tasman region. Perfectly situated halfway (about 35 minutes) between Nelson city and Abel Tasman National Park.

As you drive, you'll see the historic Upper Moutere village, rolling hills and fertile valley landscapes, signs for craftspeople, hand-crafted and locally produced food, cafés, vineyards and artists.

In the early days of Nelsons colonising most of the 140 German immigrants who arrived on the ship "Sankt Pauli" settled and formed small villages, Sarau (now known as Upper Moutere) and Neudorf were just two of these communities the settlers were mainly Lutheran Protestants with a small number of Bavarian Catholics.  The settlers brought with them hop plants and grapes vines.

Today, Upper Moutere is thriving and still popular with new immigrants from Germany, the British Isles and the Netherlands and many tourists enjoy exploring the surrounding vineyards and wineries before enjoying traditional German pastries in the village store.

New Zealand's oldest pub to remain operating in its original building, the Moutere Inn established in 1850 is located the Upper Moutere, and today still a centre of the community. While there are a couple of older licenses still operating around New Zealand , none of them are operating from either their original location or building.  Well worth a stop for a quick drink or maybe lunch.  Visitors to the pub don't just have history and great views to occupy them - the pub has a fantastic selection of beer including real ale served through three traditional "beer engines" and thirteen other taps serving a continuously changing range of New Zealand "craft" beer and cider.  Wine served at The Moutere Inn is all local and they have a great selection.
