Kahurangi National Park
At over 450,000 hectares this is arguably New Zealand’s most diverse National park, and this is reflected in the sheer diversity of flora and fauna found in this area. Translated, its name has a number of meanings including 'treasured possession', an apt description of its wonderfully diverse natural and recreational values. In places it is an untracked wilderness, elsewhere a wonderful network of tracks lets you explore wild rivers, high plateaus and alpine fields, and coastal forests. Kahurangi is in the northwest corner of the Nelson Region and can be accessed from many areas. Motueka, Takaka, Karamea, Tapawera and Murchison are some of the park's gateway towns. There are more than 570 kilometres of walking and tramping tracks in the park. The more popular longer walks include the Heaphy Track (one of New Zealand's Great Walks) and the Wangapeka Track. The Heaphy TrackLocated in Kahurangi National Park at the north-west corner of the South Island, is the longest of the DOC Great Walks. The track crosses the Park’s range of landscapes, starting from the junction of the Brown and Aorere Rivers, over expansive tussock downs to the lush forests, nikau palms and roaring seas of the West Coast. The track is well formed and suitable for fit, well-equipped people. All rivers and major streams are bridged. The track takes four to six days to walk total distance is 78.4 kilometres.
