The Nelson Rugby Festival 2011

When you think of Nelson, you probably don't think of Rugby? You probably think more about the beaches and art and crafts, the wine and seafood, the craft beers and fun in the sun etc etc...

Nelson holds a special place in New Zealand’s Rugby history so lets celebrate with a two month festival.

•  Nelson hosted the first ever game under recognised Rugby rules in May 1870
•  Nelson is the birthplace of the father of New Zealand Rugby, Charles Monro
•  Nelson is home to New Zealand’s first rugby club, the Nelson Rugby Football Club

Trafalgar Park is sporting its new world class facilities, and Nelsonians are preparing to embrace the world. It’s Rugby World Cup 2011 and we’re ready to welcome thousands of visitors to town!

The Nelson region is host to four teams, three matches, and two Fanzones, but it’s the party that locals and visitors will be looking forward to.

Many events have been arranged and it will be two-month festival that Nelson won't forget in a hurry. With over 30 events featured and more to be added in the coming months, so start making your plans now! The festival will be full of family-friendly fun that will surely fit the bill for your springtime fling in Nelson incorporating food, wine and beer, markets, art, craft, culture and heritage, through to sport, performances and exhibitions.

The flagship event of the festival celebrates Nelson as the Birthplace of NZ Rugby in a Re-enactment of the first game.
